 NOTABLE PLAYER(S)

 Gene Klein: (Class of 1970) Goalie with Beadling SC and Chartiers Valley HS. Klein played football at the University of Pittsburgh for two-years prior to switching to soccer his junior year. He began coaching as an assistant at Bethel Park before taking the head coaching role at Carnegie Mellon University. He then returned to high school with Quaker Valley High School where he was coach for a total of 29 seasons retiring with 505 career wins, a state record six PIAA titles and seven WPIAL titles. His 1996 QV team was inducted into the WPIAL Hall of Fame. They were ranked No. 1 in the nation by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, which also named Klein national coach of the year. Klein had stints as both the Technical Director and Head Coach of the Pittsburgh Riverhounds. He has also served as a member of the Region 1 ODP coaching staff.

 Don Gruba: (Class of 1973) Defender with the Colts, garnered All-State recognition as a senior.

Suzanne and Brian Krug remember when their son John was just a young boy. They would take him to his older brother’s soccer game and while Joseph was playing on the field, John would play in the sand or occupy his attention in other ways — anything that wasn’t soccer. “John just didn’t have any interest,” Suzanne said. “He would be playing in the sand box area the entire time. Then, one day when he was old enough, all of a sudden he said he wanted to play.” Now, as a 13-year-old seventh-grader at Chartiers Valley, that same kid has received an opportunity to travel to England to play the sport he once didn’t want anything to do with. WPIAL inducts several local stars into Hall of Fame Chartiers Valley's Anderson gets call When George Anderson signed on as a member of the WPIAL’s soccer committee in 1967, the sport wasn’t that popular. In fact, there were only eight sanctioned teams in the entire district. At that time, the WPIAL champion was determined by season record and there were no playoffs. “Soccer didn’t catch on because it didn’t have professional teams here until the Pittsburgh Spirit,” Anderson said, “and also it had to share the field with football and everybody knows that football has always been king in this area.” Despite those obstacles, Anderson worked together with then WPIAL executive director Charles “Ace” Heberling to initiate a playoff system and entice more member schools to begin programs.
