Chartiers Valley 7th grader selected for international tour By:  Greg Macafee Thursday, February 27, 2020 Oakdale resident John Krug was selected to play for the US Club Soccer 2020 id2 National Selection boys team. Suzanne and Brian Krug remember when their son John was just a young boy. They would take him to his older brother’s soccer game and while Joseph was playing on the field, John would play in the sand or occupy his attention in other ways — anything that wasn’t soccer. “John just didn’t have any interest,” Suzanne said. “He would be playing in the sand box area the entire time. Then, one day when he was old enough, all of a sudden he said he wanted to play.” Now, as a 13-year-old seventh-grader at Chartiers Valley, that same kid has received an opportunity to travel to England to play the sport he once didn’t want anything to do with. Earlier this month, John received an invitation to play for U.S. Soccer’s 2020 id2 National Selection International Tour
WPIAL inducts several local stars into Hall of Fame Chartiers Valley's Anderson gets call When George Anderson signed on as a member of the WPIAL’s soccer committee in 1967, the sport wasn’t that popular. In fact, there were only eight sanctioned teams in the entire district. At that time, the WPIAL champion was determined by season record and there were no playoffs. “Soccer didn’t catch on because it didn’t have professional teams here until the Pittsburgh Spirit,” Anderson said, “and also it had to share the field with football and everybody knows that football has always been king in this area.” Despite those obstacles, Anderson worked together with then WPIAL executive director Charles “Ace” Heberling to initiate a playoff system and entice more member schools to begin programs. They promoted soccer as a friendly addition to a school’s budget. “Buy a pair of shorts. Buy a T-shirt. Put a number on it. Get some soccer balls and a net and you could play the sport rel

TribLIVE | Despite injuries, Chartiers Valley boys soccer season included playoff berth

By:  Nathan Smith Thursday, October 24, 2019 | 3:53 PM The Chartiers Valley boys soccer team had to contend with one of the greatest adversary a team can face — injuries. The Colts ended their season with a 3-0 loss in the opening round of the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs, but coach Garrett MacKenzie was proud of his team’s effort in an uphill battle this season. “You always want to win the section or the WPIAL,” MacKenzie said. “But I do think making the playoffs was an achievement for this team. As a coach, you should never be happy with just making the playoffs, but we had injuries to several of our main guys. “I am proud of them making it to the playoffs.” The Colts finished the season 7-8-2 overall with a 6-5-1 record in Section 4-AAA play. Chartiers Valley was bit by the injury bug several times this season. MacKenzie estimated in the 17 games the Colts played, they had 12 or 13 different lineups. He added that 10 to 12 players between varsity and junior varsity missed

TribLIVE | Chartiers Valley grad Sean Tinney rebounds from injury, eager to get back to soccer at Slippery Rock

After a solid freshman season with the Slippery Rock men’s soccer team, Chartiers Valley grad Sean Tinney was prepared to take the next step. Then, he got a double dose of the unexpected. First came a coaching change. Kevin Wilhelm stepped in as interim coach after previous coach Steve Small, who recruited Tinney, stepped down less than two months before the start of the 2018 season. Tinney barely had time to get accustomed to Wilhelm when his season ended in the second match because of an injury. Against Lake Erie, while sliding to make a tackle, he suffered a slight tear in his right MCL and a femoral bone bruise. So as the 2019 season nears, Tinney has hit the reset button. “I’ve never had an injury like that before where I’ve had to sit out for an extended period of time,” he said. There were two pieces of good news regarding the injury: No surgery was required, and Tinney was able to take a medical redshirt. He will open 2019 season with three years of soccer eligib
